Building Solid Foundations operates with the benefit of two boards of directors – one in the US (based in York, PA) and the other based in Ghana. The combined and cooperative efforts of both Boards ensure respect for local customs and sentiments, and encourage a strong sense of ownership in all aspects of Building Solid Foundations’ work.

Building Solid Foundations’ US board includes individuals with extensive knowledge of Apam, Ghana, and experience in education, medicine, engineering, non-profit management and leadership, advocacy, community activism, and business.
Robert Davis, MD
Chair and Head of BSF Surgical Team
Retired US Navy general surgeon and retired plastic surgeon, York, PA. Dr. Davis’ experiences during more than 50 medical missions provides invaluable insight to the Surgical Team working in Apam.
Marsha Bornt, MD
Owner and practicing gynecologist at Apple Hill GYN, York, PA. Dr. Bornt has participated in multiple surgical missions in more than 10 countries including Ghana. Dr. Bornt is a seasoned non-profit leader, having served as a board member for numerous organizations in York, PA.
Vice-President of Customer Service at the York Water Company. Vernon brings extensive experience in Customer Relations and Utility Operations to BSF. He is actively involved in several not-for-profit organizations in the York area.
Chair of the Ice-Making and Fish Processing Team
Self-employed mechanical engineering consultant, North Carolina. Mr. Davis has experience working with a variety of manufacturers.
Ben Hoover II, MD, FACP
Governance Committee Chair
Retired from practice in 2007, Dr. Hoover, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (1974), Major and Chief of Medicine US Army Hospital, Wurzburg, Germany (1967 – 1970), former President of the York Hospital Staff and former Chief of the Division of Internal Medicine, and founder, Brockie Internal Medicine Consultants, resides in York, PA. His experience in a wide variety of cultural, human service, educational, and religious organizations is invaluable.
Richard Kurz, Sr. MD
An Internist in York, PA, Dr. Kurz shares his skills and talents in Apam, Ghana each year. He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of three missionary sons. Dr. Kurz loves, “…the Building Solid Foundations group, the opportunity to bring home more than I took, and effortlessly feeling God’s presence there, where it is least expected.”
Kendra is Director of Recruiting and Retention for S&H Express and Granite Transportation in York, PA.
She is an active Rotarian and serves as Building Solid Foundations Secretary.
Grace T Quartey, CPA, MBA
Co-Founder and Executive Director
Owner of Grace & Associates, CPA, MBA. Mrs. Quartey’s practice provides small business consulting and tax planning for individuals, small business, and non-profit organizations in York, PA. Born in Accra, Ghana and a resident of the United States since 1986, Mrs. Quartey is an active community volunteer.
Seth Mac Quartey, MD
Infectious Disease Specialist and Internal Medicine, WellSpan Health/York Hospital, York, PA. Dr. Quartey was born in Accra, Ghana and has lived in the US since 1981.
Frank has been to Apam, Ghana twice with BSF. He developed the initial vegetable garden there and continues to serve on the agriculture committee. Frank is Rotary Club of York member and has served as a Board Member. He participated in a Rotary Mission to Brazil to teach adults how to raise vegetables. His most recent mission was to India to participate in their National Polio Immunization Day. Frank led the cleanup and planting of trees, shrubs and flowers in a section of the York Rail Trail for Rotary. Frank is a Penn State Master Gardener and currently serves as President of the Master Gardener Advisory Board. He serves on the Penn State York County Extension Board and coordinates the award winning Gardens at John Rudy County Park for the Master Gardeners and the York County Juvenile Probation Dept.
Valerie’s nursing career spans 40 years, including 15 years as Vice President at WellSpan Health. Most recently she served as the first system-wide Vice President for Acute Care Nursing Practice. She successfully let York hospital to its first designation as an ANCC Magnet Hospital. Valerie has participated in multiple mission trips to India, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. She co-founded Nurses in Mission, an organization that inspires and support nurses and nursing students who live in Pennsylvania and wish to participate in medical mission trips throughout the world.
