Board of Directors

Building Solid Foundations operates with the benefit of two boards of directors – one in the US (based in York, PA) and the other based in Ghana. The combined and cooperative efforts of both Boards ensure respect for local customs and sentiments, and encourage a strong sense of ownership in all aspects of Building Solid Foundations’ work.

Building Solid Foundations’ US board includes individuals with extensive knowledge of Apam, Ghana, and experience in education, medicine, engineering, non-profit management and leadership, advocacy, community activism, and business.

	Mr. Steve Shellenberger Chair and Head of Environmental & Sanitation Projects for BSF Owner and CEO of the Shellenberger family of companies, York, PA. Mr. Shellenberger brings extensive knowledge of transportation, marketing, and sales to BSF. He actively participates in several community service organizations in York, PA.
	Robert Davis, MD Vice-Chair and Head of BSF Surgical Team  Retired US Navy general surgeon and retired plastic surgeon, York, PA. Dr. Davis’ experiences during more than 50 medical missions provides invaluable insight to the Surgical Team working in Apam.
	Beth Gill-MacDonald Secretary and Chair of Development Committee Retired with more than 30 years of experience in higher education and human services positions, Ms. Gill-MacDonald takes leadership roles in human service and education non-profit organizations in and around York, PA.
	Mrs. Pamela A Barnhart Treasurer Accounting Associate, Seligman, Friedman and Company, PC, and self-employed provider of bookkeeping and computer support services, York, PA.

	Mr. Wayne Davis Chair of the Ice-Making and Fish Processing Team Self-employed mechanical engineering consultant, North Carolina. Mr. Davis has experience working with a variety of manufacturers. He leads the cooperative formation efforts in Ghana.
	Seth Mac Quartey, MD. Co-Founder Infectious Disease Specialist and Internal Medicine, York Hospital, York, PA. Also born in Accra, Ghana, Dr. Quartey has lived in the US since 1981.
	Grace T Quartey, CPA, MBA Co-Founder and Executive Director Owner, Grace T. Quartey, CPA, MBA, a practice serving individuals, small business, and non-profit organizations in York, PA.. Born in Accra, Ghana and resident of the United States since 1986, Mrs. Quartey is an active community volunteer.
	Marsha Bornt, MD Owner and practicing gynecologist, Apple Hill GYN, York, PA. Dr. Bornt has participated in multiple surgical missions in more than 10 countries including Ghana. Dr. Bornt is a seasoned non-profit leader, having served as a board member for numerous organizations in York, PA.
	Mr. Eldred Atkinson Head of BSF’s Agricultural Projects Retired high school math teacher, former US Marine Corps aviation electrician (rank: sergeant), and community volunteer in York, PA, Mr. Atkinson has extensive foreign and US travel experience.
	Mrs. Sara Atkinson Head of Education Projects for BSF Retired, Mrs. Atkinson brings a broad background in public school education and non-profit leadership management through her tenures as Director, York County Literacy Council, and Director, Volunteer Services, Wellspan Health System, York, PA. She has extensive European and US travel experience.
	Mrs. Nancy Miller, RN, MBA Head of Mission Team Nurses Retired nurse educator with Wellspan, York, PA, Mrs. Miller’s nursing career encompassed 20 years in cardiovascular nursing and 20 years in education and special projects. She is part of a team of nurses developing the electronic medical record system for clinicians at York Hospital, York, PA
	Richard Kurz, Sr. MD. An Internist in York, PA, Dr, Kurz shares his skills and talents in Apam, Ghana each year. He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of three missionary sons. Dr. Kurz loves, “the Building Solid Foundations group, the opportunity to bring home more than I took, and effortlessly feeling God’s presence there, where it is least expected.”
	Mr. Richard Kurz, Jr Rich Kurz has traveled to Ghana on six mission trips and serves on the construction team.  He grew up in York, PA but currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas where he works as an engineer with Lockheed Martin.
	Ben Hoover II, MD, FACP Retired from practice in 2007, Dr. Hoover, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (1974), Major and Chief of Medicine US Army Hospital, Wurzburg, Germany (1967 – 1970), former President of the York Hospital Staff and former Chief of the Division of Internal Medicine, and founder, Brockie Internal Medicine Consultants, resides in York, PA. His experience in a wide variety of cultural, human service, educational, and religious organizations is invaluable.
